Benefits of Periodontal Treatment Oral health means more that just an attractive smile. Poor oral health and untreated oral diseases and conditions can have a significant impact on quality of life. In many cases the condition of the mouth mirrors the health of the body. Recent reports have indicated a relationship between periodontal (gum) disease and stroke, heart disease and pre-term low birth weight babies. More that 90 percent of all systemic diseases have oral manifestations. What this means? We may be the first health care provider to diagnose a health problem. Treatment can vary widely depending on the progression of the disease. If caught in the early stages, simple procedures are done that will remove the plaque and calculus from below the gum line and disrupt the infection causing bacteria. If the disease has advanced to the point where periodontal pockets have formed and the supporting bone is lost, further treatment may be necessary. Periodontal treatment is an investment on your health. Treating periodontal problems will help you achieve a healthy mouth and help prevent tooth loss. In fact, with prompt treatment, regular dental visits and proper home care, the majority of patients can keep their teeth for a lifetime.
